Helping Heroes
Peer Mediators
At St Mary’s we are very proud of our pupils and how well they do at supporting and helping each other around the school. One of the ways that the pupils can support others is through the becoming one of our Helping Heroes.
Throughout their time at St Mary’s, all the children are given lessons using a scheme by Cresst and the Young Peace Maker Project to help and guide them in resolving minor disputes with their peers. We are sure that you will agree that any training in mediating and resolving conflict with others is a very useful skill to teach all the children. Particularly as the key requirement is good listening!
Every year, the children will build on this training. We will then be asking children in Years 5 and 6 to take on the main role of Helping Heroes Leader on the playground, supported by the children in Years 3 and 4, who will be shadowing them and learning the ropes! These Helping Heroes Leaders will be selected by staff and the children in their classes. Children will then spend one break or lunch time each week acting as an extra support on the playground to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time. Whilst only a few children from each year will be selected as a Helping Heroes Leader, we know that all the children will be able to use the skills learnt in these sessions to their benefit.
